I remember waking up at night and looking at the Christmas tree and see that gifts had somehow appeared since the last time I checked. I had a big smile on my face; I could go back to sleep now. I knew I would wake up and my parents would have done a great job telling Santa, exactly what my siblings and I wanted. In the morning after running to the tree I would sit and unwrap the gifts and see my dream coming to life. These are precious memories and I keep them with me whenever the holidays arrive and I feel that I would love to have more.
I am thankful for the memories because at least I had the opportunity to know what it feels like to be a child growing up in a rich environment surrounded by my parents love. I was allowed by them to live in my own fantasy world. I was led to believe in Santa Claus and his army of accomplices around the world who only had for mission to make the kids happy. Nowadays I enjoy the same rituals whenever It feels right. However, I have learn with time that the meaning of the holiday is not about the gifts themselves but about the memories attached to the gifts. The love that came with it.
I remember the smiles and people faces more than the actual gifts. That's funny because I always thought the gifts were really what I wanted. with time I know for sure that all along in these gifts I was frantically opening; I was looking for happiness. I cried a lot when my sisters broke the NEWS to me that Santa was a fairy tale; a fraud of sort and I was furious that my parents had play for so long with my emotions. I was clueless, In reality this is the role of your elders to show you the way. They have to make sure you are stepping up and growing up even if it's a pain to get out of a comfort zone.
Then you can start looking outside yourself and forget about what you have or don't have and see how you can impact other people lives. How you can be of service. How you can offer your talent and add some meaning to this life by just involving your action even if just a little toward others. The satisfaction you get to know that you have more than you can imagine is a feeling that will bring you more always. It is being thankful and grateful knowing that everyone can go trough challenges. This is recognizing during everyday of the year and specifically during the holidays the gift of peace; the gift of health; the gift of family and friends around you; the gift of your parents; children; grand children surrounding you. In this, you will harness the best gift anyone can get or receive.
Shopping is often associated with Christmas and I understand how even religion' archetypes can be diluted over time. A gift is a material expression of love or sometimes It is just easier to give a gift than say I love you. I suggest if you can this holiday season you do both and if you can't afford all the gifts that your children; girlfriend; husband; partner ask "Santa" for; that you look at your loved ones in the eyes and tell them that you love them. They want that love more than you know.
I wish you and yours an happy holiday season. I will be back with my prediction for 2013 and the best of 2012 and we will pounder together how some of my 2012 predictions held to be true or were totally off. :)
I love you.
