Open your favorite magazines from Seventeen to Another to GQ to Vogue or Essence... Check out the advertisement and editorials and you notice that the models on the pages keep repeating themselves; they are always the same. As long as you buy a magazine that reflects and responds to the needs of the people in your niche you will feel represented but interestingly; no matter the niche or the publication you will see the same models for each niche featured over and over.
This is the same thing during runway season. Check out the videos post shows on your favorite fashion blogs or designers' websites and you will see the same faces over and over. Most models will never make it BIG because they don't want it bad enough. They will not be humble enough to learn how to become a professional model. They will not want to change or forget what they think they know and learn what they need to know. They will not want to spend money on themselves. They assume they should never pay for anything but rather be paid even though they are not PROfesional models yet.
You have often read that there is a lot of discrimination in this industry. In some cases this is true; but it is half the truth. More often models come up with all kind of excuses as for why they can't be as successful as the next model. They have all the reasons as for WHY they are not getting as much work castings or gigs as the next guys or girls. They will be online on Facebook /Twitter via there SMART phones ranting for hours on why others get the jobs but not them; blaming it on race skin color height and size; but never their own shortcomings. It came upon me trough my dealings with models from every races sizes or heights that the ones that make it BIG and stay BIG know that "SUCCESS REQUIRES NO APOLOGIES, FAILURE PERMITS NO ALIBIS." Napoleon Hill.
When I was a teen I did some modeling in Paris. I appeared in drink commercials, in one music video They made me look like a man Grace Jones. I did some artistic portraits that were exhibited in Japan and nudes for a photographer here in NYC. More recently I even had bit parts in Jamie Fox featuring Ludacris; Rob Thomas & Stephanie Mills videos. I am barely 6'; I may be 5.11'... lol far from the 6.1' standard...
Yes it is true nowadays I get the info first hand as a modeling company owner; but it was not always the case. I modeled and designed my own line of spectacle clothing before I started sending my first model to castings in 2001.
I realize I did what most models I see succeed do:
1) I would see myself modeling long before I got my first booking; I used my imagination for it. I felt good about what I saw myself doing. I smiled and felt truly happy about my progress way before I got my first check. I listened to what my Booker/Manager would tell me to do. If he told me to grow my hair I would do it; if he asked me to come meet him or if he asked me to call him right after a casting; I would call right after the casting; not when I got home or after dinner or when done chatting with all my friends lol. I did not question his expertise. I would do what I was told to do.
2) I spent money on myself and my dream. I got my pictures printed; I set up my composite cards and bought myself the best portfolio. I stretched my dollars and I got everything that would help me make the best first impression to the clients that were interested in meeting me. By investing on me and taking action I signified to the universe that I was committed to my desire to model and the universe scrambled to do as it is said in the scriptures it "Must:" give me what I had sought. When you have enveloped yourself with a certain desire; what you desire is attracted to you.
I met CALVIN KLEIN, after I was picked up on the street by one of his associate or PR person. I remember how she spotted me walking on the street in the East Village and gave me right there and then the location for the casting call which was happening the next day. I did not get that job but I Iwas seen by CALVIN KLEIN, in person and I knew then that if this could happen to me it could happen to anyone. You need to have the right mind set to make it BIG as a model you need to make yourself ready for it to happen.
2) Last but not the least I learned for hours; I practiced in front of a mirror I looked at all the publications that interested me; I saw what the models were doing the way they were posing. I collected all the info on designers and I read about them. I became passionate about it and while I wanted to do it It became my sole and only interest. I was not surprised when I landed a spoof as a "Black Napoleon," Laughing when they zoomed back to my face from the recognizable dictator famous posture with my right hand on my belly and that stupid hat. I pat myself on the back when a video I was in as a model traveled around the world and my parents got to see me dancing and grinning at the camera in a way that they never imagined I could; right from their TV set for days.
So stop making excuses and start looking at how you are looking at yourself. Be honest with yourself, but do not limit yourself. BELIEVE IN YOURSELF and be grateful for the opportunity you have NOW. Life secret is more simple than you think it is. Trough faith and persistence you can open doors that others have left half open BECAUSE THEY GAVE UP ON THEMSELVES. You can walk right trough that door when you accept that you are worthy of being there. The one who are there believed in themselves. They trusted that they belonged. They listened to the advices of people who know and had been there before them. They accepted to change their bad habits and preconceived notion of what works. They were not cut a break; instead they cut themselves one. They created the circumstances they wanted for themselves and they grew to do and be who they wanted to be instead of talking and procrastinating about what they don't get or the opportunities that are not there for them.
