I am always amazed on how much people get away with; or at least it seems for a while.
When it comes to concepts; we deal with opinions and in this case my own. Today I am sharing with you my belief about ethics; confidence and recognition in show biz.
Please keep an open mind; and I suggest you challenge me or help me redefine some of my ideas. Ideas can always be "Fine tuned." Mine are no different. We should always keep room for improvement.
Everything has been created and perfected from the beginning of time. Past present and future are human made concept that allow only for innovation.
In every generation there are innovators; not creators.
I have a strong CONFIDENCE in the statements thereof.
On "Ethics": When you are facing a moral choice realize what MORAl means and if it does not resonate with you; come closer to home and ask yourself "What would an human do in this situation."
On "Confidence:" You will need to be confident when making a decision. So take the time to think before your act; talk ; or write. You may be confident that you are right but that does not necessarily make you right. By putting yourself in the other(s) person shoes you will be able to adjust your level of confidence to what is MORALY fair.
On "Recognition:" If you want to climb the ladder of success FAST; with a strong group of supporters on your side; you will need to genuinely recognize each individual that helped you by name or their affiliation, if they are a part of huge group.
Examples of good ethics VS Bad ethics in show biz:
As a writer; music producer/beat maker; songwriter; video director; designer/Fashion Designer; Model scout /Casting Director... If you decide to use someone's work; quote them! Mention them; or acknowledge them publicly in writing and verbally as well as in the credit of your current work.
Michael Jackson R.I.P, always credited James Brown R.I.P, but omited to credit Manu Dibango for a sample he used from Soul Makossa, to write Wanna Be Startin Something; Prince, credited Jimmi Hendrix for his early style; Madonna RECOGNIZED the stars from Hollywood's Metro Goldwyn Mayer movie Studios; Lady Gaga, takes good care of her "Little Monsters" and Justin BIeber always RECOGNIZED his fans. From the early days on Youtube up to now 5 years later. Today, Justin Bieber is the stars with the most views on Youtube...
Youtube always credit the original owner of a copyrighted work in their content by redirecting a song cover to a merchant store where audience can purchase or at least RECOGNIZE the original even if it consists of only 30 seconds of original content.
Nicki Minaj, made history earlier this year by performing and rapping "Stupid Hoe" in a video by Hype Williams, using archetypes from some of the most respected photographers such as Jean Paul Goude and living legends such as Grace Jones in what turned out to be one of the most disparaging song to associate glamourous iconic images to diss Nicki's rap rival in that case the evident target was Lil Kim. The "Queen Bee," ended up winning by default because of Nicki Minaj's faux pas. As it turned out the lyrics were actually good but the video was totally inappropriate for such a song.
In comparison Madonna, used her mega hit of the early 90's VOGUE, to RECOGNIZE all the major Hollywood stars before her by name while edifying their style in imagery in her Vogue's video. She scored an everlasting result by doing so and positioned herself as an icon as well. She brought on her side music and movie fans that may otherwise not have embraced her.
So when as an artist you decide to use someone else style or music or ideas you are well advised to credit/recognize them by name in a reverent way. The downfall for not doing so is not worth trying doing without.
Click on Flyer by Chris Broady
In the video above you have here the perfect example of RECOGNITION. Although the POP UPs were edited by VH1, the only way producition could find these information is because camp Madonna; Label and Management had properly archived and filed these information with detailed credit including the names location and dates.
I was surprise recently when Chris at Broady Designs credited me with coming up with an INNOVATION when I decided to ask him to use specific imagery from THE MATRIX to change Neo's character choice of 2 pills to pick from in "Morpheus," hands into a choice of red or blue mic on each of his hands; when I ordered a flyer to help promote a new open mic I am co producing with Rick Davy & DJ Stiletto in Brooklyn. But it showed "Show Business" savvy and ethics; as I know I did not request him to mention it.
When actors or singers are about to receive an award; their emotion can be overwhelming. That's why they learn to remember important facts that have to do with credit and recognition so that they can recognize those not on the spotlight sincerely and on cue during an interview or on stage performing or recieving awards.
